A Papercraft Lamp with Mushroom Theming

Analysis of Brief
The brief for this Creative Design Studio 2 assignment focuses on the exploration of shape, form, and proportion. A well-made light shade had to be made of strictly only white paper/card and glue. Along with the completion of the lamp, the brief required 2 A3 posters and for students to safely wire their own lightbulbs.

Research Process
Research took three different approaches, an investigation on paper folding techniques, looking for different benchmark products and researching what structures exist in nature.

Idea Generation
The following concept and development sketches were designed with knowledge gained through reading multiple textbooks on papercraft and origami. The central theming of the lamp ideation was nature focused. However, through sketching, this creation was narrowed down to mushroom inspired light fixtures

Development & Prototyping
The process of this lamp started with testing how light travels through different densities of paper. Multiple layers of veil were created and attached onto the base structure in which the bulb was held. The dome mushroom cap was then added onto the veiled columns.

Final Product
Named after its inspiration; Phallus Indusiatuss or common name The Veiled Lady, the bulbous dome showcases its steady stream of delicate lace nets with the lamps centre allowing rich light flow, perfect for reading or unwinding.
